Saturday night, "The Last of Us," "The White Lotus," "The Bear," and "Beef" all garnered momentum with significant victories at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
With eight victories, HBO's "The Last of Us" was by far the overwhelming favorite. Four each were won by "The Bear" on FX, "Wednesday" on Netflix, and "The White Lotus" on HBO. On the first night of the two-night Creative Arts Awards at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, Netflix's "Beef" was awarded three trophies.
Guest actor and actress in a drama series victories for "Last of Us" went to Storm Reid and Nick Offerman, respectively. The series also won in categories pertaining to sound editing, visual effects, and other essential crafts.
Nick, who defeated fellow The Last of Us guest stars Murray Barlett, Lamar Johnson, and Keivonn Montreal Woodard in addition to Succession's James Cromwell and Arian Moayed, accepted the award. The 2023 Emmy Awardsseason was three months behind schedule as a result of labor disputes in Hollywood during the previous year. "Daisy Jones & the Six" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" both received two victories on Amazon Prime Video. "Daisy Jones" was the dominant source of inspiration for period attire. Backstage, costume designer Denise Wingate described the series as "a gift" and remarked that, having grown up in 1970s Los Angeles, she was intimately familiar with the show's universe.
"Beef" garnered success such as being cast in a limited or anthology series. Episode eight, according to "Beef" casting director Charlene Lee, was especially challenging to cast due to the need for multiple actorsto portray the same characters at various ages. In the comedic realm, Sam Richardson's performance as Edwin Akufo in Ted Lasso earned him the award for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, surpassing Jon Bernthal and Oliver Platt of The Bear, Luke Kirby of Only Murders in the Building, Nathan Lane of Only Murders in the Building, and Pedro Pascal of Saturday Night Live.
Judith Light, star of Poker Face, was honored alongside Saturday Night Live host Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary guest Taraji P. Henson, and Ted Lasso triumvirate Becky Ann Baker, Sarah Niles, and Harriet Walter for her achievement in Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
In another development, Ed Sheeran won his inaugural Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics in a Television Show for the season three finale of A Beautiful Game. However, he was not present at the ceremony to claim the award.
Five awards were presented on Wednesday, including Original Main Title Theme Music, Contemporary Costumes for a Series, Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), and Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More). Wednesday also emerged victorious.
The ceremony primarily emphasized the scripted awards that will not be presented at the Primetime Emmys on January 15. In contrast, the second installment of the awards, scheduled for Sunday, January 7, will devote the majority of the presentation to non-fiction and reality television.
The previous evening marked the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, where The Last of Us emerged victorious with a total of eight accolades.
