The anticipation for the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is reaching a crescendo as iconic musicians from various genres vie for a coveted spot in the prestigious institution. The list of nominees spans a wide musical spectrum, including the legendary Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Lenny Kravitz, the late Sinéad O’Connor, and the unmistakable Ozzy Osbourne, often hailed as heavy metal’s Prince of Darkness.
In a nod to the eclectic nature of rock and roll, the nomination pool also embraces the soulful sounds of Sade and the Britpop phenomenon Oasis. Notably, ten out of the fifteen nominees find themselves on the ballot for the first time, signaling a fresh wave of recognition for their enduring contributions to the world of music.
Ozzy Osbourne, known for his rebellious devil imagery and influential role in Black Sabbath during the 1980s, receives a solo nomination, having previously been inducted with the legendary rock band. Other noteworthy nominees include hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, soft rockers Foreigner, singer-guitarist Peter Frampton, alternative rock pioneers Jane’s Addiction, and the beloved Dave Matthews Band. The dance icons Kool & the Gang also secure a spot in this diverse lineup.
John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, remarked:
Continuing in the true spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, these artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.- John Sykes
The inclusion of trailblazing female artists is a standout feature of this year's nominations. Mariah Carey, boasting an impressive 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, Mary J. Blige with eight multi-platinum albums and nine Grammy Awards, and the timeless Cher, the only artist to claim a No. 1 song in each of the past six decades, could significantly contribute to elevating the representation of women in the hall.
To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before the ceremony. The induction event is scheduled to take place in Cleveland this fall.
ver 1,000 artists, historians, and music industry professionals will participate in the voting process, while fans can also cast their votes online or in person at the museum. The top five artists selected by the public will form a "fans’ ballot" that will be combined with other professional ballots.
Last year's inductees included Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius, Kate Bush, and the late George Michael, setting the bar high for the illustrious class of 2024.
