He is one of the four kids born to Roscoe, a beauty school teacher, and Stanley, a former police officer who served as an army paratrooper in the Korean War. Steve attended Lane Technical High School, where he received his diploma in 1982.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps soon before turning 20 and immediately after graduating, motivated by his love of the military and action. He served overseas for the next six and a half years in places including Illinois, Virginia, South Carolina, South Korea, China, and Japan.
