There's no question that Madonna is still the Queen of Pop. To start her long-awaited Celebration Tour, the Material Girl played a thrilling two-hour set at London's O2 Arena on Saturday night. The 20,000 people there were on their feet the whole time.
Before getting stuck on a technical issue, the 65-year-old artist sang "Nothing Really Matters" as the first song, "Everybody," and then "Into the Groove."
Madonna, the queen of pop, went on the first night of her world tour with a security detail that could have been on a prince. The singer drove to London's O2 in a blacked-out Range Rover, followed by four motorcycles. The scene looked like a presidential visit to the capital or something from a James Bond movie.
Madonna made sure she didn't take any chances with her safety by traveling in style and comfort to Greenwich, where her huge 78-date tour starts tonight. The Vogue singer got into her waiting car while being hidden by a crowd of guys in black suits, so no cameras could see her.
Four strong men on motorbikes, who were also dressed in all black, waited for the megastar to get into the back of her 4x4 and then formed a circle around it. Two led the way in front of the car, and the other two followed closely behind it to make sure the music star got to the venue safely to meet her fans.
Because of Madonna's health scare, her Celebration tour had to be put on hold. On October 14, the tour began as planned. Since the tour was first planned, she had always meant to stop at London's 20,000-seat O2 venue. She has been on 13 tours, but this is her first one since 2020.
As the name suggests, it's meant to honor her 40 years of hits. According to Billboard, the show lived up to its name. Early songs like "Holiday" and "Burning Up" were played, as well as career highs like "Like a Prayer" and "Vogue." Songs from the 2000s, like "Music" and "Bitch I'm Madonna," were also played.
Fans did have to wait a little while to hear those hits, though. The New York Timessays that technical problems caused the show to be 30 minutes late. Four songs in, there was yet another delay, which made Madonna say:
This is exactly what you don’t want to happen on your opening night, so this wasn’t planned. I’m sorry.- Madonna
At one point in the show, Madonna spoke out about the war going on in the Middle East.
Even though our hearts are broken, our spirits cannot be broken.- Madonna
she said, adding that she hoped for a “collective consciousness to change the world and bring peace.”
Madonna changed the dates of her North American tour. It was supposed to start on July 15 in Vancouver and end on October 8 in Las Vegas. This leg will now start on December 13, 2023, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and end at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City on April 24, 2024.
