Johnson became the backline head coach at the University of Oklahoma after a series of assistant coaching positions. He went back to his former college to become the Razorbacks' defensive line coach in 1973. He remained as the University of Pittsburgh's associate coaching staff and defensive coach from 1977 to 1978.
