“„That’s what is so upsetting to me. Since these cases are one in a million, scientists have not done that much research since it doesn’t affect that many people. Scientists haven't done a lot of study on this because it doesn't affect that many people (one in a million).- Claudette Dion
Yale Medicine says that stiff person syndrome (SPS) can lead to both stiff limbs and muscle spasms, which can happen in episodes. It can range from mild to serious, but Dion's case seems to have gotten a lot worse in the last few months.
It is very uncommon; the US National Institutes of Health says that about one person in every million has SPS. Even though no one knows for sure what causes the disorder, scientists have found some of its basic processes. For example, the immune system attacks the body's glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) proteins.
A lot of people get SPS wrong, either because it's so rare or because of the way it's named. The disorder, which used to be called "stiff man syndrome," is often written off as psychological, or all in the mind. Yale said that before doctors can make a diagnosis, they have to make sure that the symptoms aren't caused by the patient's mind.
In December 2022, Celine said that she had been told she had a rare neurological disease. In an Instagram video, she told her fans: “„Recently I have been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called Stiff-Person Syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people. While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having.- Celine Dion
She talked about some of the problems that come with having the disorder. She said that the spasms "affect every aspect of [her] daily life,"like making it hard for her to walk and stopping her from singing the way she used to.
