2023 Cannes Jury Revealed

Cannes jury head Ruben Östlund vows 'democratic' film festival

The Cannes Film Festival has named the eight people who will be on the main Competition jury. Ruben Ostlund, the festival's president, was already known. The 76th festival will run from May 16-27.
They are Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, French actor Denis Ménochet, British-Zambian screenwriter and director Rungano Nyoni, American actress, director, and producer Brie Larson, American actor and director Paul Dano, an Afghan writer and filmmaker Atiq Rahimi, Argentinean director and screenwriter Damián Szifrón, and French director Julia Ducournau.
The four women and five men in the group will look at the 21 films in the competition and choose the winner of the Palme d'Or. Cannes stated on February 27 that Ostlund would be the president of the jury. It will be just over two months before the rest of the jury is revealed.
Like in years past, most of the jury members have either directed or acted in movies that have been shown at the festival. Last year, Ostlund won the top prize for his film "Triangle of Sadness." He often goes to Cannes. He had won the big prize before for "The Square" in 2018.
"Adam," Touzani's well-reviewed first feature film, was shown in "Un Certain Regard," and Ménochet got his big break in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," which was shown in competition in 2009. "I Am Not a Witch," Nyoni's stunning first movie, had its world premiere at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight sidebar in 2017. Larson, who plays Captain Marvel, seems to be a relative newcomer to Cannes, even though she has been in many independent pictures. This summer, she will be in "Fast X" and "Lessons in Chemistry."
Dano has worked on many movies, such as "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006), "There Will Be Blood" (2007), "Twelve Years A Slave," and most recently, "The Fabelmans." "Youth" (2015) and "Okja" (2017), both in the Competition section, are two of his Cannes films. Rahimi was born in Kabul but has lived in France for a long time. In 2004, he made his Cannes bow in Un Certain Regard with "Earth and Ashes," which was based on his own book. "The Patience Stone" and "Our Lady of the Nile" were two of the movies he made after that.
"Wild Tales," which was made by Szifrón and produced by Pedro Almodóvar for the Cannes Competition in 2014, made him famous around the world as a director. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2015. Shailene Woodley stars in the police film "To Catch a Killer," which is one of her more recent movies.
Ducournau showed her first short film, "Junior," on the Croisette in 2011. She then entered "Grave (Raw)" into Critics' Week in 2016, but she didn't win the Palme d'Or until 2021, with the face-melting cinematic gut-punch "Titane." She was the first woman to win the award on her own. (Jane Campion and Chen Kaige's movie Farewell, My Concubine both won the Palme d'Or for their work on The Piano in 1993.)

The Palme d'Or will be given to one of the 21 pictures in the Competition. This is the job of the 2023 Cannes jury. On May 27, at the Closing Ceremony, which will be shown live by France Télévisions in France and Brut. around the world, the winners will be announced. The last film of the festival, Elemental, a cartoon movie by Peter Sohn, will then be shown.
