Michelle Yeoh: TIME Icon of the Year 2022

Time has named Michelle Yeoh its 2022 Icon of the Year, highlighting her 40-year acting career, which includes this year's Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Yeoh's performance in the well-received surreal action-drama makes her a favorite for an Oscar nomination. She was on Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.
Yeoh told Time that during her career, she had to "fight" against Hollywood for roles that were harmful stereotypes of Asians or Asian women. Yeoh said,
It shouldn’t be about my race, but it has been a battle. At least, let me try.- Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh, now 60, was a movie star in Asia long before she got her first role in Hollywood. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, she was known for her roles in popular Hong Kong action movies in which she did her own stunts.
Yeoh was ready to quit acting by the end of the 1990s. She had gotten married, was planning to have kids, and had been hurt on set more than once.
Yeoh told Time that she changed her mind after director Quentin Tarantino talked to her about it when he came to promote Pulp Fiction. He was a huge fanboy in front of Yeoh and recited all of her action scenes.
Yeoh then moved to American movies with Tomorrow Never Dies, a James Bond movie from 1997 in which she played Bond's equal.
She kept winning over American audiences with her supporting roles in movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Kung Fu Panda 2, several Marvel movies, and Crazy Rich Asians.
It wasn't until this past year that Hollywood started to see her as a top-billed actor with acting skills that go beyond what white audiences usually expect from Asian actors.
In the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, she played Evelyn Quan Wang, the owner of a struggling laundromat who could jump between universes. Daniels' sci-fi action comedy "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once," which stars Michelle Yeoh, comes out on March 24, 2022.
In an interview with GQ that went viral on social media earlier this year, a teary-eyed Yeoh said that her role as Evelyn was "something I had been waiting for a long time" and that she wanted to show people "what I am capable of."
Yeoh told the Los Angeles Times that taking the role was also a risk because it was a comedy and her character was funny. This was different from her other roles, which didn't have as much depth. She told Time, referring to an Oscar for lead actress.
Give it to me. It’s not about needing it – it’s that feeling that you don’t have to explain: it’s love from other people. My arms are out open. I think everyone in my Asian community has given it some thought. They approach me and tell me, 'You're doing it for us.'- Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh also said in the interview that she might not get chances even though she was praised.
I do look at all my peers - Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, Helen Mirren - and go, ‘Oh God, I envy all the different opportunities you get to showcase your talent again and again.' When you get an opportunity like this, you have to pour your heart and soul into it, because you don’t know when the next chance is. I think that is my biggest fear: please don’t let this be the one and only.- Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh said she feels the gravity of winning as Oscar. She would be the first Asian woman to win the lead actress award.

Conclusion

2022 Time magazine's Icon of the Year award goes to Michelle Yeoh, who has had a very successful year. Yeoh has worked on several projects this year, including The School for Good and Evil, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, and the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water.
But the indie film Everything Everywhere All at Once, which came out in March, is the one that everyone is raving about.
