Evan Ellingson has died. He was a child star who was best known for his lead part in the 2009 movie My Sister's Keeper and his work on CSI: Miami. He was 35 years old.
It was reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's office that Ellingson was found dead at his home in Fontana, CA, on November 5. The coroner's website says that the reason for death will be known after an autopsy is done this morning.
In Nick Cassavetes's cancer drama My Sister's Keeper, Ellingson played the son of Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric and the brother of Abigail Breslin. This may have been his most famous part. Based on Jodi Picoult's 2004 book of the same name, the movie also stars Sofia Vassilieva and Alec Baldwin.
Nicholas Cassavetes, the director of My Sister's Keeper, wrote about the former child star in a post:
My soul is crushed today. What a kid.- Nicholas Cassavetes
Keeper of My Sister Abigail Breslin paid respect to the late actor on Instagram. She said she was sorry for her co-star's death and asked people not to "speculate" about how he died. She wrote:
Evan Ellingson was a kind, funny and extremely talented human being. He played my big brother in a film I did called My Sister’s Keeper. Evan was a genuinely thoughtful person who cared so much about turning in the best performance, which he accomplished. Some of his scenes in MSK still give me chills.- Abigail Breslin
Besides playing Abigail Breslin's sibling in the 2009 movie, he also played the title character as a 10-year-old in several episodes of Christopher Titus's self-titled Fox sitcom Titus and played a single dad raising his wild sons in the short-lived ABC comedy Complete Savages. He played Kyle, a kid who was often dangerous and didn't care about guilt or safety. You could see both of them in the 2000s when Ellingson's work was at its peak. Kyle Harmon, the son of David Caruso's Lt. Horatio Caine in CSI: Miami, was his last part.
Ellingson was born on July 1, 1988, and grew up in La Verne with his three brothers. In 2001, he made his movie debut in the thriller Living in Fear. That same year, when he was only 13, he was in one episode of the long-running daytime soap opera General Hospital.
Ellingson said in an interview in 2009, adding that she started acting when she was 10 years old.
I never had the same [childhood] experience with my friends. I never had more time with them. However, my childhood was a cool one. I was busy doing the things I love. I had no regrets because I found my passion for acting early on.- Evan Ellingson
He hadn't been in a movie in 10 years, but in 2021, he went to River's Edge Ranch for addiction rehab after starting to use heavy drugs when he was 19.
Life before the drugs was kinda just fun. I’ve always been kind of a [people] person. My rock bottom was when I was 19. My older brother Austin, he died from a heroin overdose, and when he died... it sent me over the edge.- Evan Ellingson
This event made him understand “that there was much more to life and how important people were,”he said at the time.
I would have given everything that I had to be able to get my brother back, and I knew I couldn’t. And so it sent me on this downhill spiral where everything just got really dark and scary and things weren’t fun anymore.- Evan Ellingson
There’s a lot of things that God has shown me since I’ve been here at the ranch. I’m super excited about life. I know that there’s hope for me, and now I just want to let other people know that there’s hope.- Evan Ellingson
