In her new book, Britney Spears writes that she got pregnant with Justin Timberlake's child while they were dating, and that they chose to have an abortion. A portion of the book was posted on People.
From what People learned from an excerpt of Spears's future book, "The Woman in Me," Timberlake had doubts about the pregnancy because of their young ages at the time.
It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated. But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.- Britney Spears
If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.- Britney Spears
Speaking about her abortion, Spears writes:
To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.- Britney Spears
Spears and Timberlake began dating in 1999 when she was 17 and he was 18. Both of them were rising stars in the pop music world at the time. After they broke up in 2002, important people in the media, like veteran reporter Diane Sawyer, blamed Spears for the breakup. In a famous interview in 2003, Sawyer asked Spears about Timberlake, which made the "Lucky" singer cry.
After "Framing Britney Spears," an FX documentary that came out in 2021, Timberlake said he was sorry for his part in the public rage against Spears after they broke up. The documentary made the case that after they broke up, Timberlake made his former "Mickey Mouse Club" partner look like a cheating jerk in the media, which culminated in the mean music video for Timberlake's song "Cry Me a River." The movie also had a tape from a radio interview Timberlake did in 2002, where he talked about their sex life.
When he said sorry, he specifically mentioned Spears and Janet Jackson (for the costume malfunction he caused at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show). He said:
I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.- Justin Timberlake
The industry is flawed. It sets men, especially white men, up for success. It’s designed this way. As a man in a privileged position I have to be vocal about this. Because of my ignorance, I didn’t recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again.- Justin Timberlake
In 2004, Spears got married to Jason Alexander for a short time in Las Vegas. She quickly had the marriage revoked, though. In late that same year, she married Kevin Federline and had two children, Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17. The two broke up in 2006, and the next year they got a divorce.
It's a “brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope,”according to the book's website. The pop star's memoir comes out on Oct. 24.
In another piece from her book that was released by People, Spears said she felt like a "child-robot" during her 13-year conservatorship because she couldn't make her own decisions about her life and money.
I had been so infantilized that I was losing pieces of what made me feel like myself. “The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child. I became more of an entity than a person onstage. I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.- Britney Spears
